Learning about letters is more than singing the alphabet song over and over (although that can be fun for a while!).

It’s about hands-on activities, manipulating letters, using letters in real and meaningful ways.

I put together this collection of alphabet activities to inspire you as you plan to teach your students all about letters.

How to Teach the Alphabet to Kindergarten and Preschool Children

The Best Order to Teach Letters

I’m often asked about the best order to teach the letters of the alphabet.

You might not like my answer – it depends.

There really isn’t ONE correct order to teach the ABCs. There just isn’t.

The letters you should start with are the letters in your students’ names. They are attached to the letters in their own names, and their friends’ names are of interest to them.

From there, touch on letters that are used more often in reading and writing.

When doing so, be sure to remember that you don’t need to focus in on just one letter to the exclusion of all other letters.

Letters work in conjunction with each other, so it’s okay to touch on multiple letters together. This is especially true when you’re leading writing lessons, for example.
