My cabinets are painted white and I did not see any scratches not even on the one that the 2 and 4 year old use.

there is no padding and the towel bar slides quite a bit back and forth on the cabinet door but it doesn't seem to be leaving scratches or destroying the cabinet in any way.

The brackets have a protective pad inside on the part that touches against the cabinet. They are just a bit wide for my cabinets, but I solved this by using a command adhesive strip for a better fit.

I'm not sure. Mine got a little rusty on the part that hangs on the cabinet door and it did scratch up the top of the door.

I went and measured it for you. It comes out to be 13/16ths of an inch. Our cabinet doors are 3/4 inch and fit very nicely/ Hope this will work for you. too.

It's 1". Depending on the style of door you may have to do what I did. I drilled to small holes in the back of the over the door hanger and out a small screw for support. The problem is they will tend to pull off with the towel. Great little hanger for the price.
