The other half is hacking whatever it is you end up purchasing, be it with a lick of paint or an assortment of power tools. If you haven’t yet mastered the art of these Internet-famous tricks, but 2023 is feeling like your year to DIY, we’re delivering all the motivation you need from serial IKEA hackers who have been there, done that. Pax Closet System

Sortsoe Rug
I stumbled upon a cream Sortsoe rug and snagged a few to sew into oversize pillows. I hand-stitched them into a large cushion cover and then stuffed them with filling. At only $3.50 apiece, they make for a really affordable pillow, and you could use them to re-cover an old seat or stool. —Brady Tolbert
Sektion Cabinets
Wood fluting is really speaking to me right now, and I predict it’s still going to be huge in 2023. We recently gutted the old kitchen in our new fixer-upper and put in Sektion cabinets. We chose the cheapest option for the fronts, and my plan is to cover them in vertical dowels for a custom look. I’ll probably stain them, too—darker-tone woods are back! —Farah Prochaska

Billy Bookcase
Because our living room acts as a playroom, too, I’ve been wanting to add some bookshelves around the door with cabinets underneath that can hide toys. I plan on using a few of these on each side of the opening. They even have extension units to customize to your ceiling height. —Brittany Jepsen
Moppe Storage Chest
I love the dovetail details in the Moppe storage chest and thought it would be a fun DIY to grab six and stack them all up. I added modern legs to the new unit, flipped around all the drawers, and attached little knobs. Not only is it budget-friendly, it creates a modular unit that can be added to over and over for any size space. —Brady Tolbert
